  • The Matter of Material symposium, Turner Contemporary, Margate - Thursday 27 April 2017

Freddie Robins will be in conversation with curators, Day + Gluckman to discuss Unpicking the narrative: difficult women, difficult work at The Matter of Material symposium.

The Matter of Material symposium is hosted by Turner Contemporary in collaboration with the International Textile Research Centre University for the Creative Arts. Other speakers are Prof. Lesley Millar, Entangled: Threads & Making curator Karen Wright, Shelly Goldsmith, Dr. Catherine Dormor, Prof. Catherine Harper, Dr. Maxine Bristow and Dr. Beverly Ayling-Smith.

Held alongside the exhibition Entangled: Threads & Making, this conference brings together academic researchers, makers and curators to discuss the role of textiles in contemporary art practice. The Conference will discuss the use of fabric in art, how textile can be seen as a piece of beautifully designed cloth; as contributing to the expanded field of textile art; or be appropriated for a particular work. Cloth is a universal material we love it and understand it, yet we overlook, and sometimes dismiss it as (im)material.
